The wise @musangqungwana has written golden advice for young singers and a book, Odyssey of an African Opera Singer: https://amzn.to/4grOgli He writes: To All Young Opera Students:
I would like to share something from my personal experience that I believe is important. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the performing arts, highlighting the value of a well-rounded education. As more performers move into teaching, research, or other fields, having a solid academic foundation becomes increasingly important. Pursuing a master’s degree is an investment in your future. The skills you develop, whether in musicology, economics, writing, or research, will serve as a solid foundation for navigating the complexities of a professional career. Understanding the socioeconomic realities of the arts and taking complementary classes can help you become more resilient and adaptable. Music programmes must evolve to support performers in gaining a broader skill set. Combining academic learning with creative development will prepare you for roles beyond performing. As life progresses, questions like “What else can I do besides singing?” become more relevant, and it is better to have an answer before it is too late. Successful artists who have embraced a dual approach to education and performance show the value of intellectual pursuits in enhancing both art and life. By investing in your education now, you’re equipping yourself for future challenges and expanding your creative potential. Your beautiful voice accounts for only 5% of the equation; the remaining 95% is mental strength and knowledge. Use your resources while they are available. Once you have made these long-term investments, you can pass on your wisdom to future artists and move on to young artist programmes. I would not have agreed with this ten years ago, but given everything we have been through, it feels like a lifetime ago now. I encourage you to pursue your master’s or postgraduate diploma before jumping into a professional career...Please, use your youthful intellect while it is still fresh...Take that German class now, that finance elective. Whatever it is, do it!" Bravo, Musa! <3
