My take on Adele's Vocal Damage #delawarevoiceteacher #delawaresinginglessons #delawarevocalcoach #delawarevoicelessons
Adele cancels shows
Having worked with touring voices, I can say that the demands placed on them are superhuman. Besides singing the concerts (123 on this tour!), the singers are expected to do press calls - sometimes early morning, meet and greets - both before and after shows, interact with managers and band mates, and on and on all of which are very taxing on a voice. Add to that there is extreme fatigue from travel, little sleep, demanding daily schedules, jet lag, and the concerts themselves, the body - which is itself the singer's instrument - starts to wear down even if practicing perfect vocal hygiene. Late-night eating for singers - many of whom cannot eat much before a performance - can contribute to reflux and resultant wear on the vocal mechanism. There is a lot of stress, too, having all that money and others' livelihoods riding on your back. There is pressure to keep on going and press through throat disturbances resulting in the singers trying to force their bodies to be machines. And Adele has a 4-year-old at home!
The industry has made progress in understanding the needs of singers. I have seen an increase in the number of managers and producers who are keen to understand the voice, who get their singers good vocal training and help them stay on top of their vocal hygiene routines. However, even elite athletes in perfect circumstances can suffer unexpected injuries. I am sure that Adele and her managers were doing everything in their power to keep her healthy given her previous vocal troubles. If nothing else, Adele's injury should awaken many more in the industry to the need of protecting their artists' voices and hence their investments. Wishing you a speedy turnaround, @Adele !
